Grade A teak, like the wood used in Ash & Ember furniture, comes from the inner “heartwood” of the tree, while Grade B and Grade C comes from the outer layers of the tree. Unlike lower grades sourced from the outer sections, Grade A teak has much more of the water-resistant oil that makes it naturally weather-resistant and a tighter grain, which means it’s less likely to crack, warp, or succumb to wear and tear — a must for outdoor furniture! This also means it requires less upkeep than lower grade teak. On top of that, premium Grade A teak has more consistent coloring and lacks the knots and imperfections that can be present in lower grades, resulting in a higher end look.

All teak wood used by Ash & Ember is 100% sustainably sourced from Indonesia. It’s important to note that all Indonesian teak wood comes from legal, regulated government plantations, not from natural forests. This is important because plantation teak is a renewable resource and is farmed to produce a sustainable supply.

While teak wood is naturally weather-resistant, a little TLC goes a long way. Leaving your teak pieces to the elements will transform its natural golden brown hue into a silvery patina, which many people prefer. But regular cleaning with soap and water and an occasional oiling will help maintain its natural oils and bolster its water resistance, as well as help keep its natural color.
